Compact Flash

First released in 1995, CompactFlash is one of the most popular types of flash memory cards, thanks to their wide adoption by digital cameras and handheld PCs. Most high-tech digital cameras, and almost all digital SLRs are compatible with CompactFlash.

The CompactFlash advantage:

1.  They are available in two sizes:

  • Type I – these are thicker than the Type II cards and some cameras are compatible only with the Type I cards
  • Type II – has higher capacity, most commonly used ones are mechanical MicroDrive memory cards.
2. Has a controller chip in the card – enables high transfer rate. However, only cameras with large internal buffers, like the digital SLRs, can make full utilization of the high-speed CompactFlash.

3. Easily available.

4. Reasonably priced.
